Nearly Half of Business Travellers Lack Official Company Travel Insurance, TravelPerk Study Reveals

A recent study by TravelPerk, a business travel and expense management platform, has uncovered significant gaps in company-level travel insurance coverage for business travellers. The research reveals that 44% of business travellers lack official company-level travel insurance, with 24% relying on personal policies and 15% on credit card insurance.

The findings highlight the importance of insurance to employees, with travel insurance (37%) emerging as the second most critical factor companies can offer to support work travel. This surpasses other benefits like extra time off at destinations (30%) and healthy meals (24%). In response to these needs, TravelPerk has introduced a new medical and baggage insurance product for European business travellers booking return flights, providing protection as they travel globally.

This new add-on, powered by trusted provider battleface, offers a seamless in-platform insurance experience. The UK rollout follows successful launches for TravelPerk customers across Europe, addressing the growing issue of business travel disruption and patchy company travel insurance coverage. Notably, UK business travellers lead in proactivity around travel protection, with 62% of employees reporting some form of company-provided travel insurance, compared to 51% in Germany.

The new insurance product complements TravelPerk’s existing protection suite, FlexiPerk, which covers trip cancellations, 24/7 in-trip customer care, and now comprehensive insurance for unexpected medical issues or lost baggage. According to Jon Hoar, SVP Product at TravelPerk, “Nearly 30% of business travellers had encountered medical issues during work travel that were not covered by their policy, and 39% reported being unprotected for lost luggage.” The new offering aims to provide simple, reliable protection built directly into the TravelPerk platform, ensuring customers can travel with confidence.

Sasha Gainullin, CEO of battleface, noted that the partnership ensures high-quality travel insurance is no longer an afterthought. By embedding coverage and 24/7 global support directly into TravelPerk’s platform, they are delivering seamless, tech-enabled protection that gives travel admins and employers confidence their teams are covered, wherever work takes them. The new insurance product is designed with ease of use in mind, allowing users to easily purchase coverage and access full policy documentation via the TravelPerk Platform.
