HIGHLAND, Utah – A nurse has been arrested and charged with aggravated murder and obstruction of justice in the death of her friend, allegedly to claim a life insurance policy.
Meggan Randall Sundwall, 47, is accused of killing 38-year-old Kacee Lyn Terry by administering a fatal dose of insulin, KUTV reported. Sundwall reportedly believed she was the beneficiary of a life insurance policy valued at approximately $1.5 million held by Terry, according to a police booking affidavit.
Authorities were called to a home in August after Terry’s uncle discovered her unresponsive. The uncle told a 911 operator that Terry was struggling to breathe and that she was experiencing “major, major health issues,” according to KSL.
Sundwall, who admitted to being alone with Terry that day, told Terry’s uncle that Terry had been suffering for “several hours,” according to KUTV. Police documents reveal that Sundwall sent Terry a text that morning stating, “Do you want to take some promethazine when I get there so that you are asleep when this is happening?”
Sundwall claimed that Terry had signed a do-not-resuscitate order and did not want to be hospitalized. Although Terry was not diabetic, a diabetic needle was found at the home. At the hospital, Terry’s blood sugar level was measured at 14; a level of 40 is considered life-threatening, according to KUTV. Terry’s sister informed hospital staff that Terry had been diagnosed with leukemia several years prior.
A search warrant stated, “(Terry’s sister) stated that she moved Kacee out of the shared apartment and into her grandfather’s house where she lives now due to Kacee complaining about Meggan bringing insulin home and trying to talk Kacee into treatments to help end her suffering.”
Terry’s family spoke with her primary care doctor at the hospital, who stated that Terry had never had cancer, that her autopsy revealed no health issues, and that no do-not-resuscitate order was found. The doctor also confirmed that Sundwall was not Terry’s power of attorney, according to KSL.
Police discovered more than 28,000 texts between Sundwall and Terry dating back to December 2019. According to authorities, these messages included content “detailing different ways Meggan would kill herself if she was (the victim) and of Meggan offering to ‘help’ (her) die.”
Other text messages highlighted Sundwall’s financial struggles and how she could resolve them if she obtained Terry’s life insurance money, police reported.
Sundwall was booked into the Utah County Jail Thursday. The Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed that Terry’s cause of death was an overdose of promethazine, probable exogenous insulin, and other drugs.
