Nurse Arrested for Allegedly Poisoning Friend for Life Insurance

HIGHLAND, Utah – A registered nurse has been taken into custody and faces charges of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice after allegedly poisoning her friend with a lethal dose of insulin, according to local authorities. Meggan Randall Sundwall, 47, is accused of causing the death of Kacee Lyn Terry, 38, reportedly to collect on a life insurance policy.

Authorities were called to a Highland residence in August after Terry’s uncle found her unresponsive and struggling to breathe, according to reports by KUTV. The uncle told the 911 operator that Terry was experiencing “major, major health issues” and that it “sounds like she’s drowning.”

According to police documents, Sundwall, who admitted to being alone with Terry all day, informed Terry’s uncle that she had been unwell for several hours. Text messages from that day, cited in the police affidavit, show Sundwall asking Terry if she wanted to take promethazine to help her sleep. Terry was not diabetic, yet a diabetic needle was found at the scene, according to KUTV. Upon arrival at the hospital, Terry’s blood sugar level measured at 14. A blood sugar level of 40 is considered life-threatening.

Terry’s family told hospital staff that Terry had been diagnosed with leukemia several years ago. However, Terry’s family was later informed by Terry’s primary care physician that Terry had never had cancer, and no underlying health conditions were revealed in her autopsy, according to KSL. The physician also confirmed that Sundwall was not Terry’s power of attorney.

Police have stated that during their investigation, they discovered over 28,000 text messages between Sundwall and Terry dating back to December 2019. These messages purportedly contained discussions by Sundwall of her financial difficulties and how she could resolve them if she had access to Terry’s life insurance money, and other detailed messages about ending her life if their roles were reversed, according to police.

Sundwall was booked into the Utah County Jail on Thursday. The Office of the Medical Examiner has confirmed that the cause of Terry’s death was an overdose of promethazine, probable exogenous insulin, and other drugs.
