A Utah nurse is accused of tricking a friend into believing she was terminally ill with cancer before injecting her with a fatal dose of insulin in an alleged scheme to collect a $1.5 million life insurance payout, according to police.
Meggan Randall Sundwall, 47, a registered nurse, is alleged to have administered the lethal injection to 38-year-old Kacee Lyn Terry over the summer, based on newly released police documents.

Investigators uncovered over 28,000 text messages exchanged between Sundwall and Terry, revealing Sundwall’s alleged obsession with helping her friend commit suicide, the police documents stated.
The text messages, which dated back to December 2019, included discussions about “detailing different ways Meggan would kill herself if she was Terry, and of Meggan offering to ‘help’ [her friend] die,” according to the police.
Allegedly, the messages also included Sundwall’s financial struggles and her belief that Terry’s life insurance policy would solve her money problems.
It’s still unclear if Terry even had a life insurance policy, but Sundwall appeared to believe she did and that she, as the beneficiary, stood to gain $1.5 million.
Terry’s family expressed relief after learning of Sundwall’s arrest, stating they had suspected Sundwall of trying to harm Terry for years.
On the morning of August 12th, Sundwall sent Terry a text: “Do you want to take some promethazine when I get there so that you are asleep when this is happening?” as reported by KUTV.
Police were called to Terry’s home by her uncle, who found her unconscious and struggling to breathe, as if she was drowning. Sundwall told authorities she’d been with Terry all morning and that Terry had been unwell for “several hours” that day.
Paramedics reportedly found a diabetic needle at the scene.
When Terry, who had no history of diabetes, arrived at the hospital, her blood sugar level had plummeted to a dangerous 14. A blood sugar level of 40 or less is considered life-threatening.

Sundwall further claimed that Terry had a do-not-resuscitate order and did not want to go to the hospital. A search warrant later revealed that Terry’s sister told hospital staff that Terry had been battling leukemia for years. It’s unknown whether Sundwall ever told Terry’s family about the cancer diagnosis.
Terry died on August 15th.
Terry’s sister said that she “moved Kacee out of the shared apartment and into her grandfather’s house where she lives now due to Kacee complaining about Meggan bringing insulin home and trying to talk Kacee into treatments to help end her suffering,” the warrant stated.
After an autopsy, Terry’s family received devastating news: Terry did not have cancer or any other underlying health issues, and no DNR order was ever found. The same doctor also confirmed Sundwall was not Terry’s power of attorney, KSL reports.
The Office of the Medical Examiner determined Terry’s death was caused by an overdose of probable exogenous insulin, promethazine, and other drugs, according to the outlet.
After Terry’s death, Sundwall is alleged to have deleted over 900 texts from her phone and searched for the life insurance policy.
Sundwall was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail, charged with first-degree aggravated murder and third-degree obstruction of justice.
