The e-Detection system for vehicle insurance has been put into effect at 22 toll gates across Odisha, starting February 1. Vehicles found without valid insurance will incur an e-challan issued to the owner.
The State Transport Authority (STA) has finalized all preparations for the implementation of the e-detection system, covering all 22 toll gates within the state. This initiative is in line with Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which mandates insurance coverage for every motor vehicle.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in a fine of Rs 2,000 or a potential three-month prison sentence, as outlined in Section 196. Repeat offenders face a fine of Rs 4,000 and a three-month jail term.
Many private and commercial vehicles currently operate without insurance, a situation that is a concern for the state government. This lack of insurance can have dire consequences, particularly for the families of those who are killed in road accidents, as they may be unable to receive compensation.
