The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced Wednesday that Maureen Wilson, a 77-year-old resident of Owings Mills, has been convicted of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and filing false tax returns.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Wilson conspired with her husband, James Wilson, also of Owings Mills, to defraud insurance companies by obtaining more than 40 life insurance policies.
The office reported that James Wilson misrepresented the health, wealth, and existing life insurance coverage of applicants to secure these policies. The total death benefits associated with these policies exceeded $20 million, authorities stated.
After acquiring the policies, the couple is said to have forged signatures to list themselves and others they controlled as policy owners and beneficiaries. Furthermore, Maureen Wilson impersonated others when communicating with insurance companies to maintain the scheme, the office said.
To conceal their fraudulent activities, Maureen and James Wilson routed funds through multiple bank accounts, including those registered under trusts, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Maureen also filed false tax returns for 2018 and 2019, failing to report approximately $5.7 million and $2 million in fraudulently obtained income, respectively.
Maureen Wilson faces up to 20 years in prison for each conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering charge, and up to three years for each count of filing a false tax return. Her sentencing is scheduled for June 20. James Wilson was previously found guilty on January 24 of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, money laundering, filing false tax returns, and identity theft. His sentencing is scheduled for May 1, the office confirmed.
