October 31, 2024 – Pacific Life Insurance Company has confirmed a data breach impacting its customers after a cybersecurity incident at Infosys McCamish Systems (IMS). The breach exposed sensitive customer data, including names, Social Security numbers, and financial account information.

IMS, in a notice following the incident, stated that unauthorized individuals gained access to this confidential information. Following its investigation, IMS began sending data breach notification letters to affected individuals. If you’ve received such a notification, it’s essential to understand the potential risks of fraud and identity theft. Legal counsel can help you understand your options and how to protect yourself.

    What Caused the Data Breach?

While details are still emerging, the data breach stemmed from a ransomware attack on IMS’s IT network. According to Pacific Life’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts, IMS discovered on November 2, 2023, that parts of its network were encrypted by ransomware. An investigation, supported by cybersecurity experts, confirmed unauthorized activity between October 29, 2023, and November 2, 2023.

The unauthorized party accessed files containing confidential information belonging to Pacific Life customers. IMS completed its review of the compromised files on October 15, 2024, to identify the affected individuals and data. The breached information varied, potentially including names, Social Security numbers, and financial account details. Data breach letters were sent out on October 31, 2024, providing victims with details of the compromised data.
