Protect Yourself: Steps to Avoid Tax-Related Identity Theft

Tax season is upon us, and with it comes an increased threat: identity theft. Criminals will attempt to steal your tax returns by fraudulently filing with your personal information.

While no method guarantees complete protection from identity theft, several preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk this tax season. One of the most effective steps is to establish Identity Protection PINs (IP PINs) with both the federal IRS (irs.gov) and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) (revenue.wi.gov). These IP PINs serve as an extra layer of security, preventing someone else from filing a tax return in your name, even if they have access to your personal information.

Here are some additional tips to consider:

    • File Early and Securely: Identity thieves can’t steal a tax return if you file first. Ensure you use a secure internet connection, either at home or at a trusted location.
    • Secure Digital Documents: If you complete tax paperwork as a digital file, back it up and then immediately delete it from your device after submission. Empty the Recycle Bin, too.
    • Shred Sensitive Documents: Shred all physical documents containing personal or financial data, including bills, bank statements, receipts, medical information, and credit card offers.
    • Protect Your Mail: Use a mailbox lock or a Post Office Box. Consider utilizing the USPS Hold Mail® service when you are away from home. Opt-out of pre-approved credit card mail offers at OptOutPrescreen.com or by calling (888) 567-8688.
    • Freeze Your Credit Reports: Place a security freeze on your credit reports with each of the three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Contact them directly to initiate the freeze.

If you suspect you have been a victim of tax-related identity theft, follow these steps:

    • Contact the Wisconsin Department of Revenue: Report the theft immediately by calling 608-266-2772 or emailing [email protected].
    • Report to the IRS: File a report at IdentityTheft.gov. Further resources and information are available at irs.gov.
