San Diego County Homeowners Can Get Discounts on Insurance by Protecting Homes from Wildfires

Rising Home Insurance Costs in San Diego County

San Diego County homeowners are feeling the pinch of rising home insurance costs, particularly those living in areas prone to wildfires. The issue has been escalated by recent premium increases, such as the 17% hike approved for State Farm, one of California’s largest insurance providers, in early 2025.

    Protecting Homes, Reducing Costs

Homeowners who take proactive steps to protect their properties from wildfires may be eligible for insurance discounts. The California Department of Insurance mandates that insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners who participate in programs like the Wildfire Prepared Home Program. This initiative has two levels of protection: Wildfire Prepared Home Base and Wildfire Prepared Home Plus.

    Wildfire Prepared Home Program Details

    • Wildfire Prepared Home Base: This level focuses on protecting homes from ember ignition by ensuring a Class A roof, maintaining a 5-foot noncombustible area around the home, and preparing the home’s exterior, deck, porch, and yard.
    • Wildfire Prepared Home Plus: This enhanced level provides additional protection against flames and radiant heat by covering gutters, enclosing eaves, using noncombustible siding, upgrading doors and windows, and relocating sheds or other buildings at least 30 feet away from the main structure.

    Certification Process

To qualify for the discount, homeowners must hire an evaluator for a $125 fee to assess their wildfire mitigation efforts. Upon successful evaluation, the regulators issue a certificate of designation.

    Community Benefits

The program not only benefits homeowners through potential insurance discounts but also enhances community safety. According to Judy Harrington, co-chair of the Kensington Fire Safe Council, “Anything you do to make your home safer from flames and embers is great for everybody, especially because we’re only as safe as our neighbor’s houses are.” Darrell Roberts, spokesperson for the California Fire Foundation, adds that hardened homes also aid first responders in their efforts.

    Additional Insurance Options

The California FAIR plan, a state-offered fire insurance program, also provides discounts for homeowners who implement wildfire mitigation measures, offering an alternative for those struggling with high premiums.

By taking advantage of these programs, San Diego County homeowners can not only reduce their insurance costs but also contribute to a safer community environment.
