Senator Valladares Announces Home Insurance Reprieve for Hughes Fire-Impacted Residents
Santa Clarita, CA – Residents in areas affected by the Hughes Fire will benefit from a one-year moratorium on homeowners insurance non-renewals, thanks to California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara.
This decision comes at the urging of Senator Suzette Martinez Valladares, R-Santa Clarita. The moratorium includes zip codes 91354, 91355, 91381, 91383, 91384, 91390, 93040, 93222, 93225, 93243, and 93532, which encompass areas affected by the devastating Hughes Fire.
“The fires throughout Los Angeles County were devastating and the Hughes Fire was an immediate threat to our community,” said Senator Valladares. “My constituents are already grappling with unaffordable insurance premiums, and the uncertainty of having coverage is unsettling for our families when faced with the instability the fires have caused.”

On January 23, Senator Valladares addressed a letter to Commissioner Lara, expressing her deep concern for the residents of her district. She highlighted their struggles with increasing wildfire threats compounded by rising insurance premiums. Many constituents expressed fears of losing their coverage due to the fire’s proximity to their homes.
Senator Valladares’s advocacy has led to this crucial reprieve. This will provide much-needed financial security for residents already struggling with the cost of insurance.
“The Hughes Fire is another a terrible event, showing the challenges we face,” Valladares stated. “We are seeing more extreme wildfires, more destruction, and an insurance market that isn’t keeping up with these threats. I’m grateful that the Commissioner extended this relief and security to our community.”
Senator Valladares has been a long-standing advocate for wildfire victims. Her efforts include policies addressing the immediate consequences of wildfires, and long-term support for rebuilding efforts and promoting affordable insurance.
Residents in the impacted zip codes who have received non-renewal notices are encouraged to contact the Insurance Commissioner’s office or Senator Valladares’s office for assistance.
