The Shasta County Board of Supervisors (BOS) has taken decisive action to address critical issues affecting the region. In a unanimous vote, the Board approved the submission of two formal letters. One letter is addressed to President Donald Trump at the federal level, and the other is directed to Governor Gavin Newsom, focusing on state-level actions. The purpose of these letters is to strongly advocate for urgent measures concerning wildfire mitigation and the property insurance crisis.
The letter to President Trump calls for an accelerated process to mitigate wildfire risks on federally owned lands within Shasta County. A significant portion of Northern California’s terrain falls under federal jurisdiction. The Board maintains that reducing hazardous fuels and improving forest management are essential steps to prevent catastrophic wildfires. To these ends, the Board is asking for streamlined permitting processes, increased funding for preventative actions, and improved cooperation between federal and local agencies.
At the state level, the letter to Governor Newsom addresses the growing challenges homeowners and businesses face in securing and maintaining property insurance. In recent years, several major insurance companies have decreased coverage options or left the California market entirely due to the escalating wildfire risks. This has left many property owners grappling to find affordable insurance policies. The Board is requesting the state to enact substantial reforms that will restore market stability, broaden the availability of insurance coverage, and ensure that residents can adequately protect their homes and investments.
The BOS remains committed to advocating for policies designed to safeguard residents of Shasta County and ensure a secure and resilient future for the region.
