The Sokoto State Police Command has announced plans to fully enforce the Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance policy beginning February 1, 2025. This decision aligns with directives from Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and is in accordance with both the Insurance Act and the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act, which mandate that all vehicle owners maintain at least third-party insurance coverage.
According to a statement released by DSP Ahmad Rufai, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, on Friday, the command has observed a significant number of uninsured vehicles operating within the state. Reports from the Nigeria Insurance Association highlight growing concerns about uninsured vehicles, which pose significant challenges to road safety and complicate compensation for accident victims.
To ensure strict compliance with the insurance requirement, the Sokoto State Police Command has established an enforcement team comprising various security agencies and a mobile court. This team will be tasked with verifying the insurance status of vehicles and taking necessary legal action against those found to be in default.
DSP Rufai highlighted several benefits of third-party insurance, including providing financial compensation to victims of road accidents and covering injuries and damages sustained during travel. Additional benefits include strengthening the insurance industry, creating employment opportunities for Nigerian youths, and promoting a culture of responsible driving.
The command has urged all vehicle owners within the state to obtain valid third-party insurance before the February 1 deadline to avoid potential legal consequences. The Sokoto State Police Command reiterated its commitment to enhancing road safety and ensuring that all motorists comply with the law. Vehicle owners who fail to secure the necessary insurance coverage by the deadline risk facing enforcement actions, including fines and legal proceedings.
