The Supreme Court has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into allegations of insurance fraud involving a vehicle that was potentially ‘planted’ in connection with a 2017 road accident. The directive was issued by a bench comprising Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra.
The court’s decision came in response to allegations made by the Oriental Insurance Company that the vehicle cited in the accident was not the actual vehicle involved, but was instead inserted into the claim process with mala fide intent. The insurance company alleged that the vehicle was fraudulently planted to claim insurance.
The Supreme Court emphasized that insurance companies cannot be rendered powerless when faced with potentially fraudulent claims. The court directed Odisha’s Director General of Police to constitute the SIT to investigate the allegations.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of insurance fraud and the measures being taken by the judiciary to address it. The SIT probe will aim to uncover the truth behind the alleged fraud and determine the appropriate course of action.
