Teacher’s Mock ‘Suicide Test’ Claims Lives in Gujarat
AHMEDABAD: A tragic case of attempted insurance fraud has led to the deaths of three innocent individuals in Nadiad, Gujarat. According to police reports, the alleged perpetrator, a schoolteacher named Harikishan Makwana, devised a plan to stage his own death to collect a Rs 25 lakh life insurance payout for his family. The plan involved him poisoning three people in a rehearsal for his own supposed suicide, a scheme that began to unravel just three weeks after the victims’ deaths.

Authorities state that Makwana, 44, was experiencing significant personal and financial pressures when he developed the deadly plan. He was dealing with legal issues stemming from an extortion case, which he denied, and the recent death of his father, which he felt was a result of the stress caused by his legal problems.
Desperate to secure the financial future of his wife and children, Makwana allegedly sought inspiration from previous local news reports. He ordered sodium nitrite online and began to test the poison on other people before attempting the method on himself, police said. One of the victims who was poisoned was hearing- and speech-impaired.
Further investigation by the police led them to Makwana, who now faces charges related to the deaths. The inquiry is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full scope of the crimes involved.
