The Most Popular Dog Names in the United States
According to the 2025 American Pet Products Association’s National Pet Owners Survey, 68 million U.S. households have a dog. The top three most popular dog names in the country are Luna, Bella, and Charlie. Luna and Bella have swapped places from the 2023 data, while Charlie has moved up from fifth place. Max and Daisy round out the top five, though they’re bumped down from third and fourth to fourth and fifth, respectively.

The remaining top 10 list includes Lucy, Coco, Milo, Cooper, and Teddy. Buddy and Bailey fall out of the top 10 entirely, going from seventh and 10th to 11th and 12th, respectively. Luna and Bella are representative of “Harry Potter” fans, while Charlie, Max, and Daisy are classic names popularized by various media.
State-by-State Breakdown
On a state level, Luna takes the No. 1 spot in 13 states, including California, Colorado, and New York. Only six states have a most popular name that doesn’t make the nationwide top 10. The three most popular dog names in each state are listed, showing some regional patterns and unique choices.

Some neighboring states show similarities in dog names. For example, Connecticut and Massachusetts have the same top three names: Luna, Bella, and Daisy. Maryland and New York also show similarities, with Bella, Luna, and Milo being the top three.
Study Highlights
The study analyzed approximately 80,000 data points from a third-party pet insurance industry partner. Some interesting findings include:
- 66 of the top 100 names don’t appear on the top three lists for any state.
- Spelling variations like Zoey/Zoe and Remi/Remy appear multiple times on the top 100 list.
- Food names remain popular nationwide, with names like Pepper, Oreo, and Honey appearing in the top 100.
Methodology
The study analyzed data from January 2020 to February 2025, containing dog names and state residence. The data points were filtered by state and ranked to show the most popular dog names in each state. Different spellings of the same name were counted as separate names.
