HIGHLAND, Utah – A nurse has been arrested and charged with the murder of her friend and former roommate, Kacee Lyn Terry, in an alleged plot to claim a life insurance policy.
Meggan Randall Sundwall, 47, is accused of administering a fatal dose of insulin to Terry, 38, according to police reports obtained by Gray News. Sundwall reportedly believed she was the beneficiary of a $1.5 million life insurance policy held by Terry, as indicated in a police booking affidavit.
Authorities were called to Terry’s residence in August after her uncle found her unresponsive and struggling to breathe, according to KSL. The uncle relayed to the 911 operator that Terry was experiencing “major, major health issues.” Sundwall, who admitted to being alone with Terry that day, informed Terry’s uncle that she had been suffering for “several hours,” according to KUTV. Police documents revealed that Sundwall had previously texted Terry, asking, “Do you want to take some promethazine when I get there so that you are asleep when this is happening?”
According to KUTV, Sundwall claimed Terry had signed a do-not-resuscitate order and did not want to go to the hospital. However, a diabetic needle was found at the home, and Terry, who police say was not diabetic, was taken to the hospital with a blood sugar level of 14. A blood sugar level of 40 is considered life-threatening.
Terry’s sister told hospital staff that Terry had been diagnosed with leukemia years prior, according to a search warrant, while telling them that she moved Terry out of their shared apartment. “(Terry’s sister) stated that she moved Kacee out of the shared apartment and into her grandfather’s house where she lives now due to Kacee complaining about Meggan bringing insulin home and trying to talk Kacee into treatments to help end her suffering,” according to the warrant.
Further investigation revealed discrepancies in Terry’s medical information. Terry’s family consulted with her primary care doctor, who stated that Terry never had cancer. Additionally, no health issues were revealed in her autopsy, and a do-not-resuscitate order was not found, according to KSL. The doctor also confirmed that Sundwall was not Terry’s power of attorney.
Police discovered more than 28,000 texts between Sundwall and Terry dating back to December 2019, including messages that discussed Sundwall’s financial problems and how she could solve them with Terry’s life insurance money, according to authorities. The texts also contained messages “detailing different ways Meggan would kill herself if she was (the victim) and of Meggan offering to ‘help’ (her) die.”
Sundwall was booked into the Utah County Jail on Thursday for aggravated murder and obstruction of justice. The Office of the Medical Examiner determined Terry’s cause of death to be an overdose of promethazine, probable exogenous insulin, and other drugs.
