Utah Nurse Arrested in Friend’s Alleged Murder for Life Insurance

HIGHLAND, Utah – A nurse has been arrested in connection with the death of her friend and former roommate, allegedly poisoning her to claim a life insurance policy. Meggan Randall Sundwall, 47, is accused of killing Kacee Lyn Terry, 38, by administering a fatal dose of insulin, according to authorities.

Police say Sundwall believed she was the beneficiary of a life insurance policy valued at $1.5 million held by Terry, according to a police booking affidavit reviewed by KUTV. The investigation began in August when Terry’s uncle found her unresponsive and struggling to breathe at her home. The uncle reportedly told a 911 operator that Terry had significant health issues, and it sounded like she was drowning, according to KSL.

Sundwall, who admitted to being alone with Terry that day, told Terry’s uncle that Terry had been suffering for several hours prior to being found. According to police documents, Sundwall had texted Terry earlier that day, asking if she wanted to take promethazine to sleep through what was happening.

Further investigation revealed that Terry was not diabetic. However, a diabetic needle was found at the scene. Terry was transported to the hospital, where her blood sugar level was measured at 14, a potentially life-threatening level, according to KUTV. Terry’s sister later informed hospital staff that her sister had been diagnosed with leukemia some years earlier. However, a search warrant revealed that Terry had moved out of the shared apartment, after her sister said Kacee had been complaining about Meggan bringing insulin into the house and trying to talk Kacee into treatments to help end her suffering.

During the investigation, Terry’s family conferred with her primary care physician, who stated she never had cancer, never had health issues, and that a do-not-resuscitate order had not been found. The doctor also confirmed that Sundwall was not Terry’s power of attorney, according to KSL. Law enforcement discovered over 28,000 text messages between Sundwall and Terry dating back to December 2019. The messages detailed different ways Sundwall would kill herself if she was the victim and of Sundwall offering to “help” her die, according to authorities.

Other text messages between the two discussed Sundwall’s financial problems and how she could be helped if she received Terry’s life insurance money, according to police reports. Sundwall was booked into the Utah County Jail on Thursday, facing charges of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice. The Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed that Terry’s cause of death was an overdose of promethazine, probable exogenous insulin, and other drugs.
