A Utah nurse, Meggan Sundwall, has been charged with first-degree felony aggravated murder and third-degree felony obstruction of justice. The charges stem from the alleged killing of her friend, Kacee Terry, in an attempt to collect on Terry’s $1.5 million life insurance policy. Sundwall was arrested on March 20, 2025, following an investigation into Terry’s death in August 2024.
According to court documents, Sundwall, 47, allegedly injected Terry, 38, with unprescribed insulin. The act caused Terry to become brain-dead and eventually die, according to reports from ABC 4, NBC 15 News, and NBC News.

Investigators discovered text messages dating back to 2019, revealing Sundwall’s alleged plot to kill Terry. These messages, cited in court documents, detail Sundwall’s belief she would be the beneficiary of Terry’s sizable life insurance policy.
On August 12, 2024, authorities responded to a call reporting an unconscious woman struggling to breathe. The caller, presumably Sundwall, claimed Terry had “major health issues.” Upon arrival, police found Terry with Sundwall, who claimed the victim had terminal cancer, possessed a do-not-resuscitate order, and didn’t want to be hospitalized.
Paramedics found a diabetic needle at the scene and transported Terry to Mountain Point Hospital in a critical condition. Her blood sugar levels were dangerously low, and she died in the hospital a few days later. NBC 15 News reported that Sundwall claimed to have been with Terry all morning.
Terry’s cause of death was determined to be an overdose of promethazine, probable insulin, and other drugs. An autopsy later revealed Terry did not have cancer, and she had no prior health problems, according to ABC 4. Medical staff also did not recover a DNR report.
Court documents obtained by NBC 15 News state that they found approximately 28,000 text messages from Sundwall’s phone, detailing various methods of killing Terry and offering to “help” her die. Other text messages revealed Sundwall’s financial difficulties.
Following Terry’s death, Sundwall allegedly searched for the victim’s life insurance policy and deleted over 900 texts. Sundwall is currently being held without bail at the Utah County Jail, pending a pre-trial hearing. The Utah Division of Professional Licensing has also launched an investigation into the allegations. The Lone Park Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, March 23.
