Insurance Policies: A Complex Landscape
Insurance, whether for health or life, is a cornerstone of personal financial planning. However, the landscape is often convoluted, and many individuals struggle to receive the benefits they’re entitled to after diligently paying premiums. This is a sentiment echoed by Zerodha co-founder and CEO, Nithin Kamath, who recently shared his perspective on the matter.
Kamath took to X, formerly Twitter, to discuss the complexities surrounding insurance in India and offer advice related to this important financial instrument. He began with a piece of advice for those beginning their personal finance journey:
“The first thing you should do when you are starting your personal finance journey is to ensure you have sufficient life and health insurance. If you have dependents, not having life insurance is a bad idea.”
Kamath notes that some individuals are hesitant towards insurance, and he believes a significant reason is the difficulty of understanding policy documentation.
“Based on my interactions with folks, perhaps the biggest reason why they don’t have life insurance is because the policies are a nightmare to understand with all sorts of jargon and hidden clauses.”

Kamath also pointed out that insurance companies constantly change their policies, leaving consumers in a state of confusion.
“Then there’s the fact that insurers keep changing things. For example, I didn’t know underwriting rules had become much tougher and rejections had gone up.”
Kamath’s observations highlight a broader concern: insurance policy complexities and the frequency of claim rejections. These issues aren’t confined to India; other major economies, like the United States, also grapple with similar challenges.
India’s life insurance market is a significant player on the global stage, ranking as the fifth-largest among emerging markets. The market is growing rapidly, with an annual growth rate of 32-34 percent.
